    Cai Rang Floating Market situates at a branch of Hau River flowing through Cai Rang District, Can Tho City. It is a highlight attraction in any tour to Mekong Delta, also the largest wholesale floating market of this area.

    Story told that long time ago, as the land was just being exploded, there was the arrival of a giant crocodile. Its teeth were plugged into the river's bank, thus, the land was called "Cái Răng" (means a tooth). 

    According to Mr.Vuong Hong Sen (a famous historian and archaeologist in Vietnam), in a book about about language in the Southern Vietnam, "Cái Răng" has its origin from Khmer language - "karan" means Kitchen God or Stove God. The Khmer people from Xa Ton (Tri Ton District, An Giang Province) was famous for clay stove products. Boats filling with "karan" (clay stoves) from An Giang to sell in the floating market. After years, the word "karan" became familiar and people started to call the floating market as "Cái Răng" (sounds similarly to "karan").

    Closed: Lunar New Year and Mid-year Festival (5th May on the lunar month)

    Length of visit: 2-3 hours (including 30 mins boat riding from Ninh Kieu Quay to Cai Rang Floating Market and the same time for the way back).

    Boat tours: the price depends on certain tour schedules. Check with tour agencies downtown or at your hotel frontdesk for the latest price.

     

    Tips:

    - Most boat tours leave Ninh Kieu Quay between 05:00 AM and 07:00 AM, so arrive the riverfront early or they will leave the ride without you.

    - The best time to arrive Cai Rang Floating Market is arround 06:00 AM as the busiest time of the market so you can fully experience the true atsmosphere of a tradditional floating market.

    - If you are not in a tight schedule, try a private boat so you can feel fee to decide where to stop and comfort your curiousity of attractive foodstuffs from sellers on boats. But remember reserve a boat a day before of your trip; negotiate directly the price with boat drivers (easily find them along Ninh Kieu Quay).

    - Get to know what are selling by notice at the display sample hang on top of  a "cây bẹo" (a long pole at the boat's nose).
